What is a Chromebook?

A Chromebook is a small, lightweight computer that utilizes the Google Chrome Operating System.  A Chromebook operates as a portal to the internet, and most software applications are accessed online.  Chromebooks are durable, easily portable, startup instantly, and provide constantly updated virus protection.

Do students take this Chromebook home?

Yes.  Students will take the Chromebook home with them each night and will carry the device back to school daily.

Why is GTPS having a 1:1 initiative?

The 1:1 Chromebook initiative will help students learn skills needed for success in the 21st century.  This will help prepare students for high school, college, and for careers that are heavily dependent on daily use of technology. 

 

Does the district provide filtering for websites on the Chromebook?

Yes. The district filters objectionable content both at school and also when the Chromebook is used outside of school.  Please note that no filter will perfectly block all objectionable content.  Parents should monitor their children’s use of the Chromebook.

What type of activities will students do using the Chromebook?

Chromebooks will enhance 21st century instruction.  21st Century learning opportunities will include research tasks, problem solving, and targeted personalized learning.

What happens if a device is broken or lost?

A small bank of loaner computers will be available for students while a Chromebook is repaired.  A lost or stolen device must be reported to the building principal.  If the device is stolen, it must be reported to the police.

Will the district monitor how the student uses the Chromebook at home?

Students are required to follow the district’s acceptable use guidelines while at school and at home.  Parents are reminded to monitor the student’s internet usage at home to make sure the district devices are used for educational purposes only.   Any student who uses the Chromebook inappropriately at school or at home is subject to disciplinary consequences.

What if we do not have the internet at home?

Chromebooks only have limited functions when not connected to the internet.  If you do not have an internet connection at home, low cost internet can be acquired from Comcast.  Additionally, the middle schools have after school library time where students can work connected to the internet. What happens if a student forgets the Chromebook at home or forgets to charge the Chromebook?

Students are expected to bring the Chromebook charged and ready for each day.  Students are accountable for being prepared with the Chromebooks and with other class materials such as textbooks.

Is the device equipped with a camera?

The Chromebooks are equipped with a camera.  The camera may be used as an educational tool only.  Students are not permitted to take pictures, videos, or audio for other purposes.  The district cannot remotely activate the camera and the camera will not be used to violate the privacy of students.
