Parent Options under the No Child Left Behind Act
Under the provisions of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, parents of children in identified schools have certain rights to additional services. Schools that are identified as “in need of improvement” (SINI) under the Law must provide parents with certain service options.
A school becomes a “school in need of improvement” by failing to reach Adequate Yearly Progress for 2 or more years on the State Assessments. You know these assessments as NJASK tests, which your children in grades 3-8 take each spring.
Schools receive AYP “grades” based on the performance of the whole school and individual sub-groups. The sub-groups are based on ethnicity, socio-economic status, and special education status. A typical Gloucester Township school receives 12 such grades assessing the progress of our Caucasian students, African-American students, Hispanic students, Asian-American students, Economically Disadvantaged students, and Special Education students in two testing areas, Math and Literacy. If just one of these sub-groups fails to reach AYP in either subject area, the school may be labeled “in need of improvement”. We are proud to say that most of our schools routinely make AYP in all subjects and with all sub-groups. However, several schools have reached “in need of improvement” status over the years and Gloucester Township School District has done everything we can and everything we are required to do by law to help those schools over those hurdles. Many of our schools have succeeded in coming out of any such status over the years.
